Magnetic Particle Brakes

Placid magnetic particle brakes (mag brake) provide smooth, repeatable torque control. The torque control is independent of speed while the torque to current ratio is nearly linear, thereby allowing for precise control. These self-contained magnetic particle brakes are ideal for tension control, load simulation, and soft starts and stops. Some sizes are available with fan or pneumatic cooling.

Typical Applications
  • Adjustable tension – for unwinding (payout) webs.
  • Load simulation – for testing stepper motors, gear motors and mechanisms.
  • Torque limiting.
  • Soft stops.
Torque
  • Is proportional to input current.
  • Is independent of RPM.
  • Metric Units – Large Magnetic Brake Torque Range = 0.3-20 to 400 Nm.
  • Metric Units – Small Magnetic Brake Torque Range = 0-0.7 to 25 Nm.
Characteristics
  • With no electrical excitation, the shaft freely rotates.
  • With electrical excitation, the shaft becomes coupled to the case.
  • While the load torque is less than the output torque, the shaft won’t rotate.
  • When the load torque is increased, the brake will slip smoothly at the torque level set by the coil input current.
